Things to Do


Dorset has so many family friendly things to do, you will be spoilt for choice. The attractions of Monkey World, The Tank Museum, and Adventure Wonderland are all within easy reach. Fossil Hunt on the Jurassic Coast or enjoy a day out on Brownsea Island. The National Trust has many attractions nearby. To name but a few, Wilton House, Kingston Lacy House, Stourhead Gardens, and Corfe Castle often organsie special events but are well worth a visit on any day.

For a day trip Paultons Park including Peppa Pig World, and The New Forest are well worth a visit as is the ancient city of Bath. 

We are in the very heart of the picturesque Cranborne Chase area, this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty encompases 380 square miles of Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire. It includes ancient sites such as the beautiful Badbury Rings, the picturesque towns of Shaftesbury and Cranborne. The walking and cycling is fantastic and we provide OS maps and walking books for your use during your stay. 

. There are two golf courses within 20 minutes drive. Rushmore Golf Club is in a beautiful parkland setting near Sixpenny Handley and Ashley Wood Golf Club is on the road to Wimborne Minster.

For the more intrepid among you there is plenty of action on offer. At  Gorcombe Extreme Sports you can have a go at quad biking, zorbing, paintballing and dirt biking (pre booking required). If you fancy getting creative we can also put you in touch with  Cup Cake Making from only £20 per person, all in the comfort of your own cottage. 

The local Gym, in Pimperne offers temporary membership. and is very well equipped with running machines, cross trainers and lots of weights equipment. For those of a particularly sporty nature, it's a miles gentle jog across the fields! please ask me for a form to fill in to save time when you visit. 


Blandford forum
An interesting Georgian Town just 3 miles from the Holiday Cottages. Blandford has a good range of useful shops and boutiques, Boots, Smiths, Costa Coffee and Tescos for all your grocery needs.

Salisbury city and cathedral.
Home to the cathedral with the tallest spire in England Salisbury offers plenty of shops and historic places to explore.

Badbury Rings
The remains of an Iron Age hill fort dating from 3000BC. A lovely easy walk/picnic spot with some great views.

Milton Abbas
A pretty thatched village entirely moved in 1780 by the First Earl of Dorchester as it was disturbing his rural view! Famous for its picturesque village street Abbey (Pic of Milton Abbey street)

Further afield

Jurassic Coast
95 miles of stunning coatline from East Devon to Dorset. Englands first natural World heritage Site offers plenty to do from fossil walks, to rock pooling.

Coastal town with a huge sandy beach, and plenty of shopping.

For the children

Newfield Farm Cottages is a beautiful part of the countryside and children can spend many a happy hour  playing on the play area and enjoying the fresh air. At the right time of year there are blackberries and apples to pick,sloes and flowers in the hedgerows, and there are miles of walking and cycle tracks to explore.

When you need to go further afield there is so much to do in Dorset for all ages that whatever the weather there should always be something to keep you and your family or friends occupied. Below are a few suggestions:

Longleat safari Park
About 40 minutes drive away is Britains number one safari Park complete with monkeys, lions and giraffes.

Adventure Wonderland
Just 30 minutes away this Amazing childrens theme park has loads to do for the 0-9 year olds whatever the weather. The indoor playcentre is open all year round, cuddle the rabbits in Animal Cuddle corner, ride wild Bills runaway train and enjoy meeting Alice and the White rabbit from Lewis Carrols famous story. Just 10 minutes away and a good option for a rainy day, crazy monsters is a large indoor soft play area - 01258456688.

Paultons Park
Theme Park One hours drive away and home of The World of Peppa Pig.

Monkey World
30 minutes drive and one of the largest ape rescue centres in the uk.

The tank museum
Brings the history of tanks to life and houses a huge collection of tanks.

Fossil beach worth exploring

The Sealife Centre, Weymouth
45 minutes drive and home a fascinating collection of fish, seahorses, rays, and crabs.

Places to Eat

The Anvil Inn- Pimperne. local village pub. Owned by Hall and Woodhouse, the local brewery, this pretty pub is just a mile from the cottages and a lovely walk across the fields on a nice day. A good menu and family friendly. Booking advised for large groups.

Tarrant Gunville Farm Shop
Just one miles scenice country walk to this lovely shop where you can enjoy home produced bacon and eggs for breakfast or home made cake and organic coffee. Sells home produced meats, free range eggs, bread and delicious dorset Cheeses and much much more. A must for the foodies among you.
